National Doctors’ Day 2021: History and significance

National Doctors’ Day  is celebrated every year on 1st July by Indian Medical Association in honour of great physician and former chief minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. This day is celebrated to thank all the doctors who worked day and night selflessly to save our lives. This covid-19 pandemic reminded us about the importance of doctors and their contributions and sacrifices. All over the world Doctor’s Day is celebrated on different dates. Let’s know about our history and significance and why we celebrate it on July 1.

 

History of National Doctors’ Day

This day was first celebrated in 1991 in honour of former chief minister of West Bengal, Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy to recognise his contribution in healthcare sector and humanity. He was a great doctor and made many big contributions towards medical field. Dr BC Roy was born on 1st July 1882 and also died on the same day which is 1st July 1962.

He was honoured with Bharat Ratna on Feb 4, 1961. Dr BC Roy played an important role in the establishment of many big medical institutes in India, few of them are  Jadavpur T.B. Hospital, Victoria college, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital.

 

Significance of National Doctors’ Day 

The National Doctor’s Day is observed to thank and respect our doctors for their roles and responsibilities in serving lives. During this Coronavirus outbreak, the doctors and all healthcare workers are working 24×7. They are risking their own safety and their family’s safety for us. We salute all the doctors and healthcare workers who are serving even during this pandemic.

Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi also remembered Dr BC Roy in his Mann Ki Baat. He said, “On 1st July, we will celebrate National Doctors’ Day. We must pay tribute to our doctors who make sure that India did not lose the fight against Covid-19.”

We just want to say that:  “You all are Real Heroes”
